RECYCLED-CONCRETE
Conture Concrete Lab
Established in 2013 and headquartered in Bandung, Conture Concrete Lab is a forward-thinking product design and manufacturing studio that challenges traditional perceptions of concrete.
Material Story
"Urban and Industrial Waste Material: Merging rigorous industrial design with environmental responsibility to transform highly toxic, ubiquitous urban waste streams into durable, aesthetically striking products."
Born from an academic exploration into underutilized material applications, Conture Concrete Lab merges rigorous industrial design with environmental responsibility. The studio specializes in transforming highly toxic, ubiquitous urban waste streams into durable, aesthetically striking furniture, architectural elements, and everyday accessories, proving that heavy-duty materials can successfully align with circular economy principles.
Conture addresses one of the most pressing and overlooked urban pollutants: cigarette butts. Recognizing that raw refuse cannot simply be haphazardly mixed into construction materials, the studio utilizes a highly deliberate, research-backed integration process. By partnering with local waste management innovators like Parongpong, the collected cigarette filters are detoxified using hydrothermal technology. This breaks the waste down into a safe, workable pulp that can be integrated into the concrete-making process without compromising the structural integrity or safety of the final product.
Core Material Innovations:
- Raw & Lunar Textures: Conture’s signature aesthetic is achieved by infusing the processed cigarette butt pulp directly into the concrete mix. This yields a uniquely tactile, exposed surface that serves as a visual and textural testament to the material's sustainable origins.
- Basic Texture: A meticulously engineered concrete blend formulated to a robust K400 grade. It offers a smooth, uniformly colored finish that is fully customizable for precise architectural requirements.
- Commercial & Public Furniture: Scaling their sustainable concrete into heavy-duty applications, the studio designs brutalist-inspired pieces like the Jala Stool, Roso Stool, public benches, and modular coffee tables built for high-traffic environments.
- Spatial Accessories & Homeware: The studio scales its material innovation down to functional, everyday objects—producing everything from the Ondo Ashtray and Panca Beaker to customized incense holders and pet feeding bowls.
Moving beyond theoretical sustainability, Conture Concrete Lab produces tangible, market-ready solutions actively utilized by prominent architectural firms and cultural hubs. Their custom installations and ready-to-use furniture shape the spatial identity of renowned commercial venues—from specialty coffee shops like Yumaju in Bandung to ECAPS in Jakarta. By continuously advocating for responsible waste processing and rigorous design standards, Conture sets a benchmark for how modern studios can build scalable, safe, and profoundly beautiful products from urban waste.
